Medication errors represent a significant threat to patients of all ages but children are particularly at risk due to the need for individualized calculation of the dose. In addition, there are age group-specific dosage recommendations and also age group-specific indications and contraindications, which must be considered. Especially in emergency situations, in addition to the mental stress it is necessary to administer medications within a short space of time, which potentially harbors substantial dangers. For example, the wrong positioning of a decimal point when calculating the dose of epinephrine is likely to be life-threatening. Especially in prehospital emergency situations, children are often not treated by teams specialized in pediatric treatment. This review analyzes the prescription and administration process of medications during emergencies, identifies typical pitfalls and names measures and interventions known to enhance medication safety in pediatric emergencies.
