The entire energy system of electricity-, gas- and heat-supply currently faces major changes. On the one hand these changes are driven by transformations in the generation structure and on the other hand by changes in the consumer behavior. Due to these changes, especially the electric power system is brought to its limits. Existing energy infrastructure could be coupled to provide a possible relief, higher storage capacity and additional flexibility, which can also result in better utilization of existing infrastructure. Therefore, an overview of research projects associated with this field at the Institute of Energy Systems and Electrical Drives (ESEA) at the TU Wien is given.
