A 70-year-old former professional boxer suffered from severe dementia and died after food aspiration. Neuropathological examinations revealed chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE; stage III–IV), detectable by immunohistochemistry in formalin-fixed brain tissue and in stored formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) blocks. Whether this condition could have contributed to a suspected diminished responsibility regarding a serious crime he committed 27 years earlier can only be speculated.
