This study tested whether synthesizedhuman male pheromones increase the sociosexualbehavior of men. Thirty-eight heterosexual men, ages 26-42, completed a 2-week baseline periodand 6-week placebo-controlled, double-blind trial testing a pheromone""designed to improve the romance in theirlives."" Each subject kept daily behavioralrecords for 6 sociosexual behaviors:petting/affection/kissing, formal dates, informal dates, sleeping next to aromantic partner, sexual intercourse, andself-stimulation to ejaculation (masturbation)and FAXed them each week. Significantly morepheromone than placebo users increased above baseline in sexual intercourse andsleeping with a romantic partner. There was atendency for more pheromone than placebo usersto increase above baseline inpetting/affection/kissing, and informal dates, but not in self-stimulation toejaculation or in formal dates . Asignificantly larger proportion of pheromonethan placebo users increased in ≥2 and ≥3of the 5 sociosexual behaviors involving afemale partner. Thus, there was a significantincrease in male sociosexual behaviors in whicha woman's sexual interest and cooperation playsa role but not in male masturbation whichinvolves only the man. These initial data need replication but suggestthat human male pheromones affected the sexualattractiveness of men to women.
