An optical triangular-shaped pulses generation structure using quadrupling RF modulation and active polarization control is proposed. The ultimate goal is to make the expression of optical intensity approximately equal to the Fourier expansion of ideal triangular-shaped waveform. In the proposal, the dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM) is operated at quadrupling RF modulation. Thus, repetition rate of the generated pulse train is four times of the driving frequency. By tuning the driving frequency of local oscillator, continuous tunability of the repetition rate (20, 30, 40 and 60 GHz) is obtained. Numerical simulations show that the finite extinction ratio and the bias drift of the DP-MZM should be within a range respectively to obtain triangular-shaped pulses. The merit of this proposal is that it can generate high order frequency-multiplexed optical pulses train with less complex parameter alignment.
