Dystonia is a hyperkinetic movement disorder that is characterized by involuntary movements and abnormal postures. Currently, dystonia is classified into primary and secondary forms. Most types of dystonia have a physical cause, whereby the nature of the pain is often affected by psychological well-being. In rare cases, purely psychological factors are decisive for dystonia. The physical extent of the dystonia is important when selecting the appropriate form of therapy. In focal dystonia, botulinum injections at regular intervals is the most effective form of therapy. In multifocal or generalized dystonia, pharmacological drugs are administeredand deep brain stimulation should be included in the therapeutic considerations.
