Hector Berlioz (1803–1869) was one of the most colorful French artistic personalities of the 19th century. The in-depth analysis of historical sources from an epileptologic perspective supports the hypothesis that the composer might have suffered from a photosensitive idiopathic generalized epilepsy syndrome. Since the identifiable seizure types include myoclonic seizures, the retrospective diagnosis of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (Janz syndrome) seems plausible.
