The high sterility of tetraploid melon (Cucumis meloL.) plants is a serious inconvenient to obtain economicallyuseful polyploid lines. In order to study the alterations ondiploid pollen tube growth and their influence on sterility,in vitro and in vivo pollen tube growth fromthree commercial varieties and its tetraploids wasobserved. Polyploid pollen grains show a lowergermination percentage in vitro and a slowergermination rate than haploid pollen. Furthermore, diploidpollen grains producing two or three tubes and tubebranchings were observed on diploid pollen; this seems toindicate a decrease in its functionality. In vivo andin vitro pollen behaviours are quite similar, but aninteraction between the pollen and the pistillar tissues wasdetected in vivo. In the diploid × tetraploidcross, where fruits were not obtained, pollen tubesshowed a slow growth rate at the base of the pistil. Thepossible effects of these alterations in sterility arediscussed in terms of the factors that could affectfecundation.p>
