Background Prevention is not only a much discussed topic in current health policy, but also a classic field of medical activity. In addition to secondary and tertiary prevention, gynaecology can also provide an impressive range of healthcare services aimed at primary prevention in adolescent females. In addition to sex education in schools, which primarily involves imparting a basic knowledge of biology, it is important to provide adolescents with competent yet cautious information鈥攊n the context of a holistic perspective on sexuality鈥攁bout the complex changes their body is undergoing. Discussion and conclusion Adolescent girls are often fascinated to learn about the changes to how their body works, particularly in relation to daily activities and when they are able to make an association with changes they have actually noticed about themselves. Concrete guidance on sports activities is a further example of practical support the gynaecologist can offer and which enables the adolescent female to see her body as fit and powerful again, despite the changes it undergoes during puberty. Gynaecologists can also advise and support girls to develop the skills needed to use the information available to them as they enter the adult world of sexuality with its public displays of sexual desire, the fulfilment that can be achieved in a relationship, as well as the relevant aspects of sexual reproduction. Other important information includes the side effects of love, i.e., avoiding unwanted pregnancy, as well as the options available for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STI), given that these are becoming increasingly widespread, if adolescent sexuality is not to fail already on the knowledge level. In view of their medical competence, credibility and confidentiality, gynaecologists are the preferred interlocutor in relation to information on prevention.
