The Allert de Lange-Archives in the International Institute for Social Studies, Amsterdam, keeps the papers of the former German department of the Amsterdam publishing house Allert de Lange (1933–1940). After the German occupation of the Netherlands, these documents came to Berlin and Moscow but returned finally incomplete via Potsdam to Amsterdam. The correspondence between the polish author Józef Wittlin and Walter Landauer, his editor in the German department of Allert de Lange, forms part of it and provides insights both into the genesis of the German translation of Wittlins famous war novel Sól ziemi which caused its worldwide success as well as into his friendship with Joseph Roth, who took care of it. Both is described on the basis of this correspondence.
