The article explicates two theoretical approaches that might explain why rising powers often rebel against international orders even though these orders have provided for their spectacular growth. Whereas lateral pressure theory holds that increasing material needs can incite conflicts with established powers, status theories stipulate that economic success might give rise to frustrated ambitions for greater recognition. Both theories are utilized to derive testable research hypotheses.
