Key message Aleppo pine stands can be made more resilient to disturbances such as forest fires, by introducing native and resprouting hardwood species. Pine density impacts seedling establishment by modifying resource availability and abiotic stress. Under Mediterranean conditions, moderate thinning (15-0 m 2 /ha) was the most effective in promoting the establishment and growth of a number of hardwood species.
