Pitfall traps are widely used to sample soil arthropods. The mixture employed in the traps can affect the rate of catch. We compared the efficiency of the pitfall traps between five mixtures in a field experiment with special reference to seven selected taxa (Isopoda Oniscidea, Diplopoda, Chilopoda, Araneae, Opiliones, Coleoptera Carabidae, Coleoptera Staphylinidae). For the overall individuals sampled, mixtures based on beer or wine showed high sampling efficiencies, presumably because their high concentration in sugars. The mixture based on wine is the best for five out of seven selected taxa. The mixture of saturated solution of NaCl in vinegar results in a high efficiency only for Coleoptera Carabidae, confirming it as the best mixture for this group.KeywordsPitfall trapsMixturesSoil arthropodsANOVACentral Italy
