The goal of a family-centered intervention in neonatal medicine is to develop a partnership between the staff members and the parents. Kangaroo-mother-care and breastfeeding are opportunities to develop this partnership as the pain prevention and treatment and the family-centered medical rounds. More complex programs, based on different theoretical and practical approaches, have been scientifically evaluated: the NIDCAP, the COPE, the Family Integrated Care, and the Family Nurture Intervention. Meta-analysis has shown a positive impact on neurobehavioral outcome for preterm newborns. Implementation strategies are important to consider for an optimal impact.KeywordsNICUNewbornPrematureFamilyEarly intervention
