Aim We aimed to estimate the efficacy and the tolerance of a combination of ketamine and propofol (ketofol) for procedural sedation and analgesia in children. Procedure An open cohort study was carried out in the Syrian refugee camp of Za’atari (Jordan) during summer 2013. The induction was composed of propofol (1 mg/kg) and ketamine (1 mg/kg) followed by a maintenance with propofol (4 mg/kg/hour). Boluses of propofol and/or ketamine were realized if needed. Results Ten procedural sedations were performed in 8 children (6 males and 2 females), with an average age of 4.5 ± 3.4 years (extremes: 2-2). The main indication was thermal burns (80%), for which the burnt body surface was always lower than 10%. Total administered drug doses were 3.5 ± 1.7 mg/kg (extremes: 1.8-.6) for the propofol and 1.4 ± 0.9 mg/kg (extremes: 1-.9) for the ketamine. The indicated procedure had always been realized in good conditions. The safety level was acceptable and no unexpected side effect was reported. Respiratory and cardiovascular depressions were mild and easily controlled. No serious event occurred. The recovery was quiet and good quality in all children. Conclusion Ketofol appears as an active and suitable combination for procedural sedation and analgesia in the management of burnt children. However, the procedure was time consuming and required the constant presence of 2 physicians, which fits more to a regulated activity.
