Zinc oxide (ZnO) photocatalyst was prepared by a microwave-assisted method starting from zinc acetate and oxalate. The as prepared photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, room-temperature photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, N2-adsorption specific surface area measurements and ultraviolet–visible light absorption. The photodegradation performance of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTMAB) over the ZnO under ultraviolet radiation was investigated. The results showed that the CTMAB degradation first increased and then decreased with the rise of ZnO dosage and the optimum dosage was 2 g L−1, and weak alkaline of pH 9 was more efficient for the CTMAB photodegradation.
