Symptomatic uterine fibroids are a common and important cause of morbidity in women in the reproductive phase of life. The rate of fibroid-associated complications during pregnancy is approximately 10鈥?0鈥?; however, the available study data are insufficient. During early pregnancy, fibroids are associated with an increased miscarriage rate and hemorrhages are more frequent especially if placentation occurs close to a fibroid. Fibroids can for example cause premature labor, placental abruption, placenta previa and fetal deformation and malpresentation in late pregnancy. During pregnancy pain is the most common fibroid-associated complication, especially in the presence of large fibroids (>鈥?聽cm) during the second and third trimesters. In general, treatment is conservative and includes bed rest, analgesics and antibiotics. In rare cases, however, surgical treatment is required and the main focus is on myomectomy as a last resort.
