In this paper we focus on the development and application of a retention index database for aroma compounds with high structural diversity. Retention indices of over 300 aroma compounds were determined on three capillary columns of different polarity. The capability of the retention index database was evaluated by identification of the components of tobacco flavor. The results showed that the database can be used for qualitative identification. The database also contains a good set of retention index data for study of quantitative structure–retention relationships.
