Parenteral nutrition is the reference treatment of short bowel syndrome-associated intestinal failure. The latter is characterized by severe malabsorption of fluids and nutrients. Long-term parenteral nutrition needs to be performed at home. This is a life-saving treatment of a disease that was always lethal forty years ago. However, it is associated with complications, mainly infectious, with catheter-related bloodstream infections due to a lack of hygiene, and metabolic, such as hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia and mainly metabolic diseases of the liver, bone and kidney. Prevention of these complications requires follow-up and training by a multiprofessional team in an expert center, based on recommendations by professional societies.
