Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are very rare. However, they may be a challenge with respect to diagnosis and treatment. In most cases, patients present with unspecific symptoms or gastrointestinal bleeding. Therefore, gastroenterologists may be the first to suspect the diagnosis of GIST. Since GIST most often arise from the muscularis mucosae, they present as a submucosal tumor during endoscopy. GIST are incidental findings in 20% of cases. Standard treatment for localized GIST is complete surgical resection. The use of adjuvant imatinib therapy in patients with completely resected localized GIST with a high risk of recurrence has significantly improved overall survival. Imatinib at a dose of 400 mg/day is the gold standard for patients with advanced or metastatic GIST.
