The larval morphology of Pantophthalmidae, a peculiar family of xylobiont flies distributed in the Neotropical Region, is studied. The larva supposedly belonging to the genus Opetiops End. is described and compared with the known larvae of Pantophthalmus Thunb. In the larval characters, the family is closest to Stratiomyidae and Xylomyidae. Adaptations to habitation inside wood have resulted in the closeness of the larval general appearance to the representatives of Temnostoma Le Pel. et Serv. (Syrphidae).
