With an incidence of 2–5 %, frozen shoulder syndrome is one of the most frequent shoulder pathologies. Frozen shoulder syndrome can be classified into primary and secondary forms. The etiology of the primary form is generally unknown and due to comorbidities. Thus, a comprehensive diagnostic workup is required. Here, a distinct pathology of the shoulder is often lacking, whereas in cases of the secondary form the pathology can be determined. In cases of the primary form, conservative treatment can be initiated. Patients with secondary frozen shoulder syndrome frequently display a mechanical problem which should be surgically addressed. Independent of the etiology, an arthroscopically arthrolysis (release) should be performed if mobility is continuously limited. This technique yields good and reproducible results, leading to rapid symptom relief.
