Physical examinations and diagnostic interviewing integrated in a general health survey among the multicultural population of Amsterdam The Amsterdam Health Monitor 2004/2005 Estimates of prevalence rates of determinants of chronic disease based on self-reports are not always valid. Furthermore, the interpretation of screeners of mental health may be different for ethnic minorities compared to the Dutch ethnic population. It is necessary to use additional research methods to gain insight into the health status of the urban population, especially of the growing Turkish and Moroccan migrant groups. In 2004, a general health survey was conducted among a random sample of the Amsterdam adult population, with an overrepresentation of Turkish and Moroccan migrants. Data on health status were collected on location via face-to-face interviewing. Furthermore a physical examination was conducted to measure endogenous risk factors for cardiovascular disease. In 2005, in a second phase, diagnostic interviewing was used to validly measure mental health and validate some of its screeners. It is possible to integrate physical examinations and diagnostic interviewing in a general health survey among a multicultural urban population. This can generate objective data on physical health and adds to the insight on mental health among ethnic minorities. This paper describes how physical examinations and diagnostic interviewing were incorporated in a general health survey and which methods were used to improve response rates among ethnic minority groups. Furthermore feasibility, response and representativeness of the study are discussed.
