Bandwidth enhancement of a compact microstrip antenna is achieved by using a L-shaped patch and a parasitic patch. The L-shaped patch and the parasitic patch are half-wavelength resonators, and their resonant frequencies close to each other and merge to form a wideband. Moreover, the parasitic patch is loaded along the inner edges of the L-shaped patch to avoid large antenna size. A prototype antenna that covers the 5.8-GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) band is designed. Detailed investigation is conducted and found the two resonant frequencies can be tuned independently. The proposed antenna is fabricated and measured. The measured results obtains an operating band of 5.7–6.08 GHz (6.5 % at 5.89 GHz) for VSWR < 2.5, and cover the 5.8-GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) band. Good radiation patterns are also observed.
