Surgical intervention is not required in pregnancy gingivitis but interdisciplinary treatment should include technical information and regularly scheduled dental checkups. A healthy oral microbiome in pregnancy gingivitis can be recovered by treatment with probiotics. During pregnancy, oral bacteria and their metabolites can reach the fetoplacental unit and fulfill their important biological function of inducing immunological tolerance. There is no association between pregnancy gingivitis and preterm birth.
