The question whether atopic dermatitis (previously termed neurodermatitis) is a psychosoma in terms of a psychogenic disease must be answered with no. The conversion model developed earlier in psychoanalysis is no longer tenable based on current knowledge of the pathogenesis. The diagnosis of atopic dermatitis is characterized by the conditions of a chronic disease in children and adolescents with occasional persistence into adulthood, characterized by long-term adaptation and an increased risk of developing psychiatric symptoms. The subject-specific (dermatological) treatment concept always requires holistic, psychosomatic and family-oriented support based on the psychosocial circumstances. The principle of interdisciplinary cooperation of several professional groups is thereby usually indispensable.
