Anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid therapy often induces hyperglycaemia due to insulin resistance and islet-cell dysfunction. Incretin-based therapies may preserve glucose tolerance and pancreatic islet-cell function. We hypothesised that concomitant administration of the DPP-4 inhibitor sitagliptin and prednisolone in men at high risk to develop type 2 diabetes, could protect against the glucocorticoid-induced diabetogenic effects. 1 Diabetes Centre, Department of Internal Medicine, VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 2 Department of Methodology and Applied Biostatistics, Institute of Health Sciences, VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 3 Department of Physics and Medical Technology, VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 4 Institute of Clinical Biochemistry and Pathobiochemistry, German Diabetes Centre, D眉sseldorf, Germany, 5 Department of Endocrinology, Ghent University Hospital, Ghent, Belgium, 6 Institute of Biomedical Engineering, National Research Council, Padova, Italy
