Philip Oxley died June 20, 1998, from complications related to leukemia. Phil graduated with a B.A. degree from Denison University in Ohio in 1943. He received an M.A. degree in 1948 and a Ph.D. in 1952 from Columbia University. His major professor was G. Marshall Kay. Phil's first job in geology was as a teacher at Hamilton College, Clinton, New York. After a successful five years there, he launched into petroleum geology, first with the California Company. Later positions were with Tennessee Gas and Transmission, Signal Oil and Gas, and Texas Crude Oil Company. In 1971, he joined Tenneco Oil Exploration and Production. Assignments one after another there finally led to the presidency of the company. After his retirement from Tenneco, he served two more years as chairman of Tenneco Europe Ltd. in London, finally taking retirement in 1989. He then joined the faculty of the University of Colorado as professor in the Department of Geological Sciences and director of the Energy and Minerals Applied Research Center. In addition to his long career in industry and academia, Phil Oxley served on numerous boards, including Denison University's Board of Trustees; the Geological Society of America Foundation Board; advisory boards at the University of Houston, University of Texas, and Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston; and the Board of Trustees of the Storch Foundation at Columbia University. Phil had been a frequent public speaker on geology, on oil and gas exploration, and on energy resources in the United Phil was an avid fisherman and was never happier than when wetting a fly line to attract a wily big trout or salmon. In a letter received by Richard Mahard, his professor at Denison, a month before his death, he stated, "After the AAPG meeting in Salt Lake City and then to an Elder Hostel in Ketchum, Idaho, I hope to lay some flies over large trout in Silver Creek or the Wood River and elsewhere."
