Locations for minerals considered to be strategic by the government of the People’s Republic of China were kept secret during the latter part of the “Cultural Revolution” until 1978. We discuss the historical background to this practice. For the first time, the “undisclosed” locations coded “C”, “W”, “X” and “Y”, in various Chinese articles and in the western literature are disclosed.
