The shortening associated with monoclinal folds draped above reverse faults is expressed in terms of size-free parameters. It is thus shown that if bedding-plane slippage occurs between the beds and if the beds are not exceptionally thick, layer-parallel shortening must take place at the early stages of monoclinal folding. This shortening is eventually followed by a stage of layer-parallel extension.
