It was not very long ago that many of us thought about borehole geophysics in the relatively simple terms of a straight-hole VSP (you'd never acquire a VSP in a deviated well) which we used only for a better seismic-to-well tie and more detailed velocity control for time-to-depth conversion. We had seen examples of walkaway VSPs, and had even heard that some day 3D VSPs might become a reality, but had a difficult if not impossible time convincing decisionmakers that technologies such as these were well worth the investment, that they provided unique opportunities to collect data that could make a critical difference in our exploration and production efforts.
