A large underground junction was to be constructed 2750 ft deep in the new Monkton Hall Colliery in Midlothian, Scotland. The junction was to house a bunker conveyor and stringent stability requirements were called for. The local geological condition was not favourable. The geological approach to the design is discussed. The design involved shaping and an intensive rock bolting programme. Support and construction methods are given and performance is described, including results of some photoelastic stress measurements.
