A new gobletlike, thin-walled lyssakid protosponge, Gabelia pedunculus n. gen., n. sp., is illustrated and described from a Devonian shale in the northern Roberts Mountains, Nevada. The sponge has an upper egg-shaped part to the "goblet" and a cylindrical stem, which terminates in a hemispherical base. The skeleton is composed of up to five orders of hexactines and hexactine-based spicules, but with first-order hexactines arranged in crude diamond patterns rather than the ideal rectangles of most other genera in the Protospongiidae.--Journal abstract.
