Extensive seismic work and exploratory drilling have led to the discovery of several oil fields, including Renqiu Field. (1) Eleven major pre-Tertiary blocks present in this depression are the products of the Himalayan orogeny, but were controlled by the structural pattern of the Yenshan movement. (2) The center of block faulting gradually shifted. Activity had a pulsating pattern, sometimes stronger and sometimes weaker. The blocks have been subjected to multiple processes of disruption and combination, not only by tensile, but also by torsional stresses. (3) The development of block activities led to unique sedimentary buildups in each period. (4) At least 10 types of traps have been identified. Each of them has a definite spatial distribution. In this area, there are mainly three series of oil and gas pools--buried hill, Tertiary, and Paleozoic-Sinian. Because most of the exploration efforts in this area have been expended on the buried hill, there still is excellent potential for future petroleum exploration in the Jizhong Depression.--Modified journal abstract.
