The forces of nature can be devastating when people put themselves at risk by working, living, or playing in areas susceptible to rapid or uncontrollable changes in ground stability or conditions. Developments in geophysics over the last 75 years have positioned us as a community of scientists and technical service providers to assist with emergency search and recovery efforts and, at varying levels of confidence, predict, monitor, and identify risks associated with specific kinds of natural and anthropogenic disasters.
