We thank A. Vasanthi, K. Sharma, and K. Mallick for their favorable comments on the potential utility of the standards for the North American gravity database that are described by the North American Gravity Database Committee (Hinze et al., 2005). Although we are inexperienced with the finite-element method of isolating residual gravity anomalies described by Mallick and Sharma (1999), we disagree with Vasanthi and his coauthors’ assertion that this method of regional∕residual separation is simpler and more accurate in identifying crustal anomalies than is the isostatic gravity method specified in the standards for the North American gravity database.
