This study examined the relationship between gender, perceived parent-child bonding, and non-alcohol drug use among Armenian-American adults. Participants were recruited using a non-random method of convenience sampling and snowballing within local communities and businesses of the City of Los Angeles. The sample consisted of 92 participants (34 male,58 female) who completed the mother and father forms of the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI),the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST),and a demographic questionnaire. Two hypotheses, their subcomponents, and an ancillary analysis were conducted. The first hypothesis stated there would be no significant difference in mean scores on the DAST inventory between males and females. Hypothesis 1 was minimally supported, therefore analysis was conducted with both pooled and unpooled samples. Hypothesis 2a (pooled sample) stated that males and females who have high protection and low care (affectionless control) attachment with their fathers will have greater levels of drug use (as measured by the DAST) than males and females who have either a high care and low protection (optimal parenting),high care and high protection (affectionate constraint),or low care and low protection (neglectful parenting) attachment with their father on the PBI inventory. This hypothesis was supported. Hypothesis 2b (pooled sample) was an identical hypothesis formulation, with the replacement of mother for father, and was not supported. Unpooled sample hypotheses 2a,2b,2c,and 2d were all identical hypothesis formulations, with groups as follows: males and father, males and mother, females and father, and females and mother. Unpooled sample hypotheses 2a and 2b were not supported, however unpooled sample hypotheses 2c and 2d were supported. Ancillary analyses of hypotheses 1 and 2 (pooled sample) were conducted with heterogeneous parental bonding styles removed. Thus,20 participants were removed during this ancillary analysis. Both hypotheses were supported. Limitations of the study,as well as recommendations for future research, are discussed.
