The digital information revolution has brought about profound changes in our society and our lives. The many advantages of digital information have also generated new challenges and new opportunities for innovations. This thesis discusses the issues regarding chaotic data hiding and its application to multimedia security and communications, addressing both theoretical and practical aspects. In the theoretical part, we identify a few key elements of data hiding, which is modelled as a communication problem where the embedded data is the signal to be transmitted. Studies have proposed various data hiding methods targeting at different tradeoffs of embedding distortion, robustness and payload. Most of them can be classified into two major categories according to whether the availability of the original host signal can improve the detection performance. In this thesis, the effective chaotic data hiding methods that belong in these two categories respectively are proposed. Their performances in terms of embedding distortion, robustness, data payload and computation complexity are analyzed. In addition, the performance of the proposed chaotic methods is compared with that of conventional linear methods. In the application part, the chaotic data hiding methods are used for copyright protection of digital images, speech bandwidth extension and video authentication respectively. The specific requirements of these applications are discussed. In accordance with design requirements, a proper chaotic method is selected. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the chaotic data hiding methods.
