Anorexia nervosa is a psychological and medical disorder that can be emotionally and physically devastating. Self-worth,self-confidence,body image, societal expectations, and genetic factors are probable causes for those suffering from anorexia. The increasing prevalence and intensification of anorexia nervosa has been linked to media that promotes eating disorders, known as pro-anorexia. These pro-anorexia websites reject the medical model of anorexia and have re-defined anorexia as a lifestyle choice. Clients identify that these websites empower, engage, create trust, and support them in "managing" their low weight. Ten clinicians engaged in open ended interviews and 6 clinicians participated in a focus group to understand the implication of pro-anorexia on treatment outcomes. The data indicated that clinicians are aware of pro-anorexia websites but lack understanding that pro-anorexia manifest into an identity, creating resistance to treatment. Clinicians report ineffective treatment outcomes as pro-Ana,the identity is not being appropriately addressed or identified in treatment. This research provided a framework for clinicians to understand the implications of pro-anorexia and the associated identity. The findings underline the importance of clinical attention and further research into the clinical community to improve treatment interventions and effectiveness for clients engaging in pro-anorexia philosophies.
