This thesis serves as a study to explore the application of the management principles of synergy and teamwork to an interdisciplinary arts festival. Using the College of the Arts (COTA) at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) as my test, I created Fusion, an interdisciplinary art festival featuring each department of COTA. The goal of Fusion was to present the college's offerings to the Long Beach community in Downtown and to begin collaboration between the disparate departments of the College. This report will examine examples of collaboration in the form of successful art festivals that have led to the attraction of new audiences and financial stability. Through these examinations, the key principles will be juxtaposed to the current practices of the COTA at CSULB in order to explore the effectiveness of synergy in art on university campuses. Multi-genre art events, such as Fusion, can be the model for the application of these principles in the arts by discovering potentially untapped market segments and fostering artistic partnerships, which can in turn develop new audiences for a particular artistic community and secure diversified revenues.
