Application of high dynamic range photography to bloodstain enhancement photography

In order to assist in bloodstain pattern analysis, it is common practice to apply chemiluminescent reagents to the bloodstain to enhance the pattern's visibility and then photograph the results. One limitation encountered using the traditional method of chemiluminscent photography is that normal cameras do not have the dynamic image capability to capture both the chemiluminescence and the surrounding area in detail. This study proposed an alternative method of photographing enhanced bloodstains, using high dynamic range (HDR) techniques to capture the textures and details visible in ambient light as well as enhance the bloodstain visibility. This research used a sequence of low dynamic range (LDR) images to create a composite HDR image. The sequence consisted of several photographs in ambient light and one photograph in darkness using BLUESTAR
? FORENSIC. It was shown that the composite HDR merge was able to display fine detail from the ambient light photographs as well as visually enhance the bloodstain. However, the composite merge suffered from color distortion and pixilation in the final image.
