This study explored reasons for noncompliance by Latino dialysis patients with end stage renal disease ESRD), a serious disease that requires major changes in life-style, including dialysis, strict diet, fluid restrictions, and medication. Compliance is a major problem, especially for Latinos and patients from other cultures. The sample for this qualitative and descriptive study consisted of 30 patients of Hispanic origin, ages 21-75 years, receiving outpatient dialysis at a dialysis center in east Los Angeles. A researcher-developed interview guide exploring perceptions of reasons for noncompliance was administered. Results indicated difficulty in understanding instructions, high insurance deductibles, and difficulty in paying for medications. Other barriers to compliance were forgetfulness and medical problems, such as stopping medication use when feeling sick.
