Scholars have long focused their attention on the famous members of the Beecher family. During the 1970s, they began to turn their attention to Isabella Beecher Hooker, an ardent feminist who allied herself with Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and the National Woman Suffrage Association. While scholars have explored Isabellas reform work, no one has considered the reform activity of her husband, John Hooker. By the time of their marriage, John was an enthusiastic supporter of abolition. With his encouragement, Isabella came to embrace abolition as well, igniting her interest in reform. When she turned her attention to womens rights, John joined her in that work. This dissertation explores Isabella and Johns efforts to promote reform, particularly woman suffrage. This comparison reveals the different roles, paths, and opportunities available to men and women who advocated womens rights in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Women composed the vast majority of advocates for woman suffrage. Still, some men supported the movement. In the years immediately following the Civil War, a group of Republican men supported the extension of the vote to women, but their first priority was suffrage for black men. Historians of woman suffrage have acknowledged these men but they have not explored the ways in which men engaged in the movement. The Hookers private correspondence and public writings in support of reform reveal how gender shaped men and womens ability to advocate womens rights. Isabellas changing domestic responsibilities shaped her ability to work on behalf of reform. Once her children were grown she was able to devote herself to reform work, though her public support of womens rights drew criticism. Johns responsibility for supporting his family also shaped his ability to participate in reform work, but his legal talents and professional reputation opened up avenues for the advocacy of woman suffrage. This dissertation includes men in the history of woman suffrage, adding depth to our understanding of the movement.
