With unique properties such as superposition and entanglement, quantum computation offers tremendous improvements in all aspects of present-day information processing, ranging from search algorithms and cryptography schemes, to error correction methods. Because these quantum systems can all be realized experimentally, it is no longer sufficient to define a supercomputer solely in terms of classical components. A quantassical solution is proposed, which will exploit the best of both classical and quantum components. Using optics and cavity-QED, quantum cryptography and quantum error correction is successfully implemented into the quantassical solution, replacing obsolete classical components. Still at its infancy, quantum computation shows great promise for the future of mechanical reasoning.
