This dissertation challenges the traditional historiography on the Italian communes through an examination of the bishopric of Siena from 1282 to 1371. Historians have tended to overlook the role of bishops in society after 1250, instead focusing on secular institutions, the papacy, or the development of new urban religious groups, such as the mendicants. My work demonstrates that the bishops of late medieval society deserve a reassessment. I argue that episcopal authority was the connective political, religious, and cultural force that bound communal society together. In five chapters, this dissertation examines the religious institutions of the Sienese diocese, the administration of the cathedral, fourteenth-century episcopal legislation, the role of the bishop in civic religion and culture, and church-state relations. The bishop of Siena derived power from his administration of the Sienese church, his control of the episcopal patrimony, and his role in Sienese civic-religious celebrations. He directed networks of patronage and, through sacred prerogatives, exerted influence in communal politics. The bishop also led religious ceremonies on feast days and legitimated the ruling class through his participation in communal processions and rituals. Far from adversarial, ecclesiastical-civic relations between the Sienese bishop and governmental authorities were marked by a spirit of genuine cooperation and common interest. In all of these ways, bishops were central figures in communal societies and played a key role in the exercise of state power. Siena also provides a particularly interesting case for the study of family history, as the city’s episcopal office was dominated by one local noble family, the Malavolti, for almost a century. Members of the Malavolti clan pursued a corporate strategy over several generations that depended on their control of key church offices and their ability to connect the family to the prestige and power of the episcopal office. This work raises important issues related to the nature of ecclesiastical authority, the role of ritual and ceremonial performance in politics, the institution of the family, and the relationship between religious and civic authority in the development of Western society.
