The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among self-efficacy,competition outcome, and causal attributions under a hypothesized sport self-referent thought model. A total of 218 intercollegiate badminton players (Males = 107,Females = 101) were recruited from 8 schools in northern and middle Taiwan. Subjects participated in the first week's badminton skills test and completed a badminton self-efficacy measure, then competed with same ability players in the next week. Immediately following the competition, subjects completed a Chinese Causal Dimension Scale-II and assessed their self-efficacy again. Pearson Production Method revealed prior sport performance correlated with pre-competition self-efficacy. However,Chi-Square Comparison and one-way ANOVA analyses indicated that subjects high in pre-competition self-efficacy did not win more competitions than subjects low in pre-competition self-efficacy. Further, correlation analyses indicated that pre-competition self-efficacy correlated with stability in the winning situation, but not in the losing situation. Moreover, two separate one-way MANOVAs found that winners reported self-enhancing attribution patterns. However, subjective losers reported self-protecting and self-defeating attribution patterns. Also, four separate stepwise regression analyses found that subjective outcome predicted locus of causality and external control negatively, but objective outcome predicted stability and personal control positively. Finally, another stepwise regression found pre-competition self-efficacy and personal control attributions predicted post-competition self-efficacy. The results indicated that the influence of self-efficacy on competition outcome may depend on contextual, personal, physical, cognitive, and emotional factors during competition. Also, contextual and cultural factors may influence subjects' attribution patterns and self-efficacy perceptions. The present study suggested that future study may focus on the theoretical connections between self-efficacy and attributions and examine their tenabilities in athletic settings.
