In a world of ever-developing impersonal media, oral traditions remain a way in which people can revisit the stories of history told by those who lived it. Oral history holds a great amount of value both for families and for society as a whole as it provides a way for us to look back on history and know the lives of everyday Americans. Idahos Custer and Lemhi counties contain endless stories recounting history as experienced by those who lived it rather than through secondary texts that tell about it. Among the residents of these two rural counties are ranchers, miners, and outfitters who have experienced the land and life in a way that is unique and particular to those geographic areas. Unfortunately, the stories of these communities are vanishing as their tellers fade into time. As such, the endeavor of performing oral history research in Idahos Custer and Lemhi counties has begun in order to preserve these voices and experiences as an important part of Idaho history and as a representation of these peoples defining characteristics.
