Self esteem issues among Black women in Pentecostal Churches.

This research study utilized a qualitative method to examine self-esteem issues among Black women in Pentecostal Churches. This study was designed to engage Black women in Pentecostal Churches who had self-esteem issues and discuss how they reached their potentials in life. Few studies have included perspectives of Black women in Pentecostal Churches, their personal journeys regarding religion and spirituality, and the impact of coping mechanisms for these self-esteem issues. Descriptions were prompted through face-to-face, structured focus group questions for twelve Black women between the ages of 18 and 65, who were members of the Pentecostal Church. The following research questions guided this study: (a) What is the link between church views and issues with self-esteem for Black women in Pentecostal churches? (b) How are self-esteem issues dealt with in the Pentecostal churches? (c) What interventions can be developed for Black women with self-esteem issues outside of the church? All patterns and themes were coded by using thematic analysis to organize and manage data files. The empowerment theory and the problem-solving model were used as the theoretical framework for this qualitative study. Findings may have important suggestions and provisions for leadership and mental health professionals who need resources for change in their future attempts when working with Black women in the Pentecostal Churches who may suffer with self-esteem issues. Findings in this study also recognized the fact that religion and spiritual beliefs helped Black women in Pentecostal Churches cope with their self-esteem issues. The conclusion and implications to the study showed that faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ could help heal issues with self-esteem. Constant communication with the Lord Jesus Christ gives new meaning and purpose to those struggling with self-esteem issues. Therapy is essential in helping women to overcome obstacles in their lives. It is shown to help them set positive goals for themselves and believe that God will help them to achieve their goals.
