The underrepresentation of women in the field of Information Technology (IT) is an issue that the industry has observed for many years. The underrepresentation of women in IT project management positions poses an even greater issue. The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship of gender gaps and the impact of workplace factors influencing the underrepresentation of women in IT project management. The workplace factors reviewed in this study were motivation, socialization, experience, attitude, and work-life balance. Participants included 93 project managers (41men and 52 women),all U.S. residents with three or more years of IT project management experience and all at least 25 years old. A demographic survey was used,as was a validated, combined quantitative survey constructed from the works of McKinney et al. (2008) and Colquitt (2001). This study revealed there was not a significant difference between men and women in the factors influencing why women were underrepresented in the workplace as IT project managers. The findings of this research led to recommendations that further study may be needed in a larger environment. This study utilized a confidence interval of +-10.6,confidence level of 95%,and a sample size of 93. The sample size of this study may provide limitations and may not be used as a generalization for all IT project managers.
