This dissertation examined the extent of teaching the history of science in high school physics courses in Suffolk County,New York,and whether or not teaching the history of science was mandated by the State Education Department of the University of the State of New York. A literature review of the empirical educational practice suggests that educators considered including the history of science in science courses to be beneficial,and positive results are reported. A survey questionnaire was mailed to all 112 high school physics teachers in Suffolk County to determine their teaching practice for including the history of science. Documents and material examined for history of science content included N.Y. State syllabus,learning standards,and curriculum mandating publications,the physics textbooks used in Suffolk County,and the 1995&ndash；2001 Regents Physics Examinations. Conclusions reached are that the N.Y. State syllabus,learning standards and curriculum guidelines for teaching the history of science are inadequate and deficient. The physics text books used do not include the history of science in an integrated and meaningful manner with technical content,and the physics regents examinations do not test the history of science. In spite of the above,forty-six percent of the teachers report they often or always teach the history of science. A major recommendation is that the N.Y. State Education Department emphasize the history of science in controlling documents,in the regents physics examinations,in the physics textbooks,and in providing for teacher training in the history of science.
